Godoy Cruz preview
By: Jeremy |I don’t know what to expect from the Mendocino’s. They are striker poor due to injury. The only two times they have played Newell’s were draws. 2-2 in the Apertura 06 in Rosario, with goals from Santiago Salcedo and Oscar Cardozo. They followed that up with a 1 all affair in [...]
Basile wants out, guess who wants in?
By: Jeremy |Basile stepped as Argentina’s coach after the loss to Chile (go Marcelo Bielsa). The three names mentioned most? Sergio Batista (Olympic gold medal winning coach), Miguel Angel Russo (San Lorenzo) and Diego Simeone.
I’ve not seen comments by the other two, but Batista said he would take the job. Probably a [...]
The next two weeks will tell the tale.
By: Jeremy |Godoy Cruz, Estudiantes, River, and Central. How this stretch plays out will go a long way to determining if La Lepra can challenge for the title or not.
With friends like this….
By: Jeremy |I know this is a Newell’s blog, but Rosario Central has a lot to do with La Lepra. After all, if we didn’t have them to beat, what would the season be like. First, new coach Vitamina Sanchez said that fans spit on him, among other things. (leading to the famous “Yo [...]
Surprise player?
By: Jeremy |Well, the season is halfway home, and since this weekend was international weekend, there isn’t much game related going on, so I thought I’d talk about this season’s players.

Beef, It’s What’s For Dinner
By: Jeremy |Under Fernando Gamboa, the team has a new Friday tradition – a big, fat, red meat feast. Every Friday, the team sits down for a huge barbecue. Gamboa learned a lot about building team chemistry from another Newell’s legend, Marcelo Bielsa, when Gamboa played for him. His stated goal is to replicate [...]
Lopez Running Like a Rat
By: Jeremy |Yesterday I posted about the manifestation of Newell’s fans at the AFA. Here’s a picture of our esteemed president Eduardo Lopez, complete with bodyguards, running away from the ‘mob’. He was the last one of all the club presidents to leave the building from the meeting of the AFA executive committee.
Hot Potato
By: Jeremy |I can’t remember if I posted this or not, but several weeks back, Newell’s held their annual general assembly where the dictatorshipleadership presents the books for all of the socios to see and then they vote to approve it.
The Soap Opera Continues
By: Jeremy |Seems like 50 or so Newell’s supporters made their way down to the Argentine Football Association to hurl insults (and some rocks) at club president, and all-around rotten guy, Eduardo Lopez. They carried placards saying “Lopez is an usurper. Leave Newell’s alone, now.”
