Newell’s - Real Salt Lake
By: Jeremy | March 6th, 2008Real Salt Lake is spending two weeks in Rosario and playing a few scrimmages along the way. They started out with a 0-0 draw between the two clubs reserves, and Newell’s B team drew 1-1, with the goal by Pablo Vazquez (penalty 53), who entered in the second half.
After the morning practice, which I’ll try and post about tomorrow (new names and tactics, interesting), Caruso left Bella Vista and headed over to the Coloso to direct the B team in the scrimmage against RSL. For the record, the starting 11 were Lucas Hoyos; Pablo Aguilar, Héctor Gaitán, Ignacio Fideleff, Walter Payer; Mauricio Sperdutti, Carlos Vacca, Mauro Formica, Cristian Llama; Damián Steinert y Pablo Vranjicán. Only two have seen any minutes with the first team this year, so it was good to get them some time against RSL.
That’s about all I can find out. No photos, no videos, no nothing. Although I somehow get the feeling that RSL feels they were robbed on the penalty call that led to Newell’s goal. I’m not real sure who scored for Real, but I believe the equalizer came about two or three minutes from time, but don’t quote me on that.
I’d love to see a little video, as I am trying to choose an MLS team to follow (since the Silverbacks are USL) and RSL is on my short list.

Jeremy I would like to extend the invitation to you to join us if you will. following RSL this year is going to be a thrill to years pass, and with 4 argentines what more could you ask for?

Question: If most of the players on the pitch for Newell’s were reserves (since you said only two of them have seen first team minutes), who played in the 0-0 reserve match earlier? Does Newell’s actually field 3 teams’ worth of players (starters, reserve A, reserve B)? Where were Newell’s real “titulares” for this game?

Let me see if I can explain it a little better. Newell’s basically has 34 player’s under contract with the team. There is a group of players that compose the A team. They include the starters and a group of players that can start but usually compete for a “suplante” (substitute) spot. The team that played against Real Salt Lake was made up of the suplantes.
When they aren’t on the bench, they form part of the reserve team for the reserve games that take place each week.
The rest of the reserve team is basically everybody else on the roster. I can’t find any information on who played in the reserve game. Most of the reserves don’t even sniff the bench. They provide depth and future potential.
The titulares for the game against Racing were:Villar; Ré, Schiavi, Spolli, Quiroga; Nico Cabrera, Bernardello, Scotti, Donnet; Da Silva y Salcedo.
None of them played against RSL.
