Beyond the thumping

By: Jeremy | February 24th, 2008

Ok, instead of a recap/lowlight post, let’s just say that la lepra laid an egg in the second half of a game tied at one at the break. We couldn’t keep up pace with Estudiantes forwards. And we paid the price. And I still don’t understand Vazquez in place of Da Silva instead of Ferreyra. But none of that really matters when you let in 5 goals.

Only time will tell if this is going to be a recurring nightmare, or if it was just not our day. It happens. Teams crap out. Not a big deal. We’ll still finish the season in the top half of the table and avoid relegation. This wasn’t a game about avoiding the drop, but about seeing how we stack up against the top of the table. Not so good, apparently. Last week, after River, Caruso said that a win would have had people talking about and Newell’s and the title. A win over Estudiantes would have done the same thing. Now we know where we stand.

Next week is the big game. Next week is the must win. As of now, Newell’s sits in tenth, three games into the season. No big deal being tenth. That isn’t the table that matters so much to us this season. The table that matters is the promedios (averages). We currently sit fifteenth, level on averages with Colon.

In case anyone reading this isn’t familiar with the promotion/relegation system in Argentina, I’ll throw out a brief summary. Teams are relegated based on a rolling average of points won over their last three full seasons (aperatura and clausura equal one season). At the end of the Clausura, the teams in the Primera Division that sit 19 and 20 are automatically relegated to B Nacional. The top two teams in B Nacional are automatically promoted. The teams in Primera that sit 17 and 18 then play a promotion/relegation game against the teams from the B that are third and fourth. Some years only two teams go down but four went down at the end of the last Clausura. This system was instituted back in the 80’s to protect the larger teams from going down, or so the saying goes. San Lorenzo had just been relegated and River looked sure to follow. But averaging saved them from the drop. Boca was pretty bad then and Racing actually went to B even with the averaging.

Amid, go to http://www.tycsports.com. The table is just below the video at the top of the page. It takes a few seconds to load after the rest of the page is visible.

It is defaulted to current league positions, but click on the promedio button next to posiciones and it will give you the current relegation averages.
