Boca 0 – 2 Newell’s
By: Jeremy | February 14th, 2009Just like that and Newell’s is 2-0 to start the season. I’m sensing a trend, a scoreless first half followed by mulit-goal second halfs and smothering defense.
Even with a few dodgy free kicks awarded to Boca, I thought the referee did a good job, and the linesman was all over the offside positions that Boca players were continually taking.
My prediction was a little wrong, Newell’s got the 2, but Boca didn’t get the 1. And while Armani did score the first, and Salcedo came on for him, it was a different S that got the second goal for La Lepra. The goal was I believe Sperdutti’s first in the primera.
So many people played well, but I’m going to nominate Sebastian Peratta as man of the match. He stopped an almost sure goal on a break away and was solid whenever Boca challenged him. He stayed in goal when he should and he broke on the ball when he needed to. Boca could have easily scored on one or more of those chances, but Peratta kept his head and Newell’s walked out of La Bombanera winners for the first time since ‘04.
I’ll try and get some video of the game up as soon as I can find it.

A win at Boca feels great. And what it will do for the confidence of the team could bring benefits for the rest of the season.
