Caruso is not making this easy
By: Jeremy | June 12th, 2008Well, today in practice, Caruso and Cabrera got into it. Caruso divided the squad in two and played two thirty minute halves. Nico Cabrera, Seri, Llama and a couple of others weren’t in the first half. When Cabrera approached Caruso about playing the second half, Caruso told him to keep jogging, that he wasn’t going in.
Which incensed Cabrera and he accused, rather loudly, Caruso of not respecting him, blah, blah, blah, by not telling him he wasn’t going to be in the scrimmage. Caruso fired back that they (Cabrera, Seri, Llama, et al) didn’t do the exercises he had set out, so they wouldn’t play.
So Cabrera started to leave the field, but Schiavi talked him into staying a little longer. When they finished, Nico took off without even showering. After the practice Caruso talked for a while with most of the team about what happened.
He had a meeting later with Lopez, as did Husain, Zapata, and Schiavi about what is going on right now with the team. Husain and Zapata didn’t play either, and they are reportedly on Caruso’s short list to dump. Schiavi still swears that his problem isn’t with Caruso, but with Ariel Peracarari the trainer. Caruso wants Schiavi to continue as captain, so apparently they are working out whatever ails them, or at least being professional about it.
The more I think about it, the more I think this is just sour grapes from guys that know they don’t fit in with Caruso’s plans. Last season he took over after the clasico. So no chance to bring in his kind of guys. This season he brings in some (and some he doesn’t like now) and got rid of some. One more year and his stamp will be all over this team. Then we can see whether he can emulate Bielsa or not.

I agree. A new coach is not what is needed at this point. The guys that got laid off aren’t big contributors anyway. But Lopez needs to come out and give Caruso an extension so he can get started bringing in new players as soon as the season ends.
