ex-NOB Ortega to Rivadavia?!?

By: Jeremy | August 6th, 2008

Well, I know he is a River player, but he had some good times in Roario back when he won the Aperatura ‘04 with la lepra, so I thought I would throw this out there. I saw a story on TyC that stated he was heading to Independiente Rivadavia and not Al Ain Sports as had been originally reported. Then I checked Rivadavia’s web page and they are proclaiming that he has agreed terms verbally and they only need to work it out with River.

I know the baggage he brings and what his battle with alcohol has cost him and River, but I still got just a little bit excited when Lopez mentioned him to Caruso as a possible transfer target after he fell out with Simeone the first time. But I guess it is best to remember the good he did in ‘04 and wish him luck in Rivadavia, or wherever it is that he winds up next.

The only picture I could find of El Burrito in a Newell’s uniform.

So yeah, here’s the scoop in 6 easy steps.

    1) Last Friday, Ortega’s face is all over the news in Argentina with a video of him getting into a car at 6am after a night of partying, visibly drunk, mind you, and backing into a gas pump before driving off.

    2) Simeone asks the directors to separate him from the team due to his recent episode and the it is done.

    3) River offers Ortega a new two-year contract with the club with the caveat that Ortega seek help at any facility in the world at the club’s expense. Ortega insisted that he wanted to continue to play first team football and did not want to submit himself to a substance abuse program that would cause him to cease playing.

    4) Faced with having to seek treatment by staying with the club he’s always loved, Ortega takes matters into his own hands and agrees to the contract offered by a club of the United Arab Emirates league. The loan would last 10 months. River had refused this offer only a week earlier.

    5) Ortega’s wife refuses to leave for the Middle East and the door to that option closes.

    6) The option of Independiente Rivadavia of Mendoza opens up. Ortega agrees to play with that club and get treatment for his addiction in nearby Chile once a week. The loan is for 10 months.

Sounds like BS to me. His weekly treatments are going to consist of more drinking and drugs (Why not? Who says the press is telling us the whole story?) while he plays out the end of his career in Argentina’s second division.

    Ridiculous.

At least he’s not poisoning the River Plate locker room anymore.

His WIFE!!! Doh, I should have known. This gets more bizarre by the day. Turn down a River contract that stipulates mandatory treatment and sign for a second division side that stipulates mandatory treatment. What am I missing here?

Most fan blogs and forums I have seen are calling for Simeone’s head, but that was totally the right call. The club is bigger than any one man.

Humm, they said it was because there was a rehab in Chile that he would go to Mon-Wed, but it makes you wonder. Although I did think hard liquour was more to his liking.

Apparently, he wasn’t going to be playing for River while doing his treatment. I believe Simeone was done with the drama that Ortega was causing and with good reason.

So, he’ll be getting treatment and getting first team football… in the second division, however. Word is, he’ll be starting this weekend for his new side.
