Full Time: La Lepra by a goal!
By: Jeremy | August 8th, 2008Great way to start out the season, especially after all the turmoil of the off season. A win for Gamboa his first time out as manager of Newell’s. Re’s goal proved to be the decider (and only goal). His four goals have come in four games and Newell’s won each one with a clean sheet.
Observations and analysis of the game.
Forwards: We need Fabianni. I’m not sure if Da Silva even made it to the pitch. I think he got lost on the way from the locker room. Ferreyra was a warrior, he fought for every ball, played some good defense, and he was all over the pitch. The problem was that he was not a threat in front of goal and did very little to maintain possession when he had the ball. If you are a defender then it is not much of a problem. Since he is a forward, problem. Still next week in two weeks (thanks to Boca’s ridiculously timed tour of Europe) if Gamboa doesn’t try out Armani, then by all means yank Da Silva’s worthless carcass and let Fabianni play with Ferreyra. I was underwhelmed by Da Silva last season and he only advanced that feeling tonight.
Midfield:
Machin is everything I thought he would be. Fast, fairly good passer, managed to be in the right place at the right time. Re’s goal was the rebound off of his shot. In the middle of play a lot.
Perez had an okay game, considering he was pressed into service today. We need Fretes dead ball skills. Most of the deliveries were too low or way off target. Vangioni was solid as always on defense on the left side but not much use on the attack. Bernardello appeared a bit distracted. Not a terrible performance, but nothing too solid either. Seemed to get whistled a lot and got a yellow card, as did Vangioni and Perez. Huhm, all three yellows went to the midfield.
Defense:
Schiavi and Re were excellent. The first few minutes were a little shaky for the defense, but these two stepped up and settled it down really quickly. Schiavi was a machine. I didn’t catch the guy’s name, but one of Gimnasia players was on a break away for a one on one with Caffa in goal and Schiavi caught him from behind and knocked the ball away. Big play. Perez was solid, didn’t get beat and wasn’t out of place. Insaurralde started slow but settled down in the second half. Not the best of debuts for him, but a clean sheet means no one had a bad game.
Goal:
Caffa’s play tonight will go a long way to calming the nerves of everyone wondering how he would fill in for Justo. He was only really tested once, on a shot by Messera that was pretty high and to his right and headed in, but he jumped and knocked it away. Gimnasia came pretty close another time but the ball sailed by wide to the left and Caffa was right there. I really liked how good he looked coming out of goal to grab the corners and long balls.
I’ll post part II tomorrow.
