Last thoughts on Caruso Lombardi
By: Jeremy | August 7th, 2008I know it is time to move on. Gamboa seems to be earning the respect of the players and appears to be quite the motivator. More on him in another post. I thought I would take one last look back at Caruso’s time with la lepra.
There were a lot of rumors flying around at the end. Ole even had a secret source that said Schiavi, Husain, and Zapata had this secret plan to get rid of Caruso. The man himself lent some credence to that, and even went so far as to say that Lopez said that he (Lopez) didn’t get rid of Caruso. Who knows what really happened.
Suffice it to say that Caruso angered some players and never really got along with Lopez. So he is gone. But lets just take a minute to see how he ranked against all of the other coaches la lepra has had since 1994. In the ruinous reign of Eduardo Lopez, who took over in 1994 and HAS ILLEGALLY NOT ALLOWED ELECTIONS since then, there have been at least 16 different coaches. Ranking them in order of points per game, the winner is Americo Gallego who won the Aperatura 2004 title with la lepra. Right behind him is Caruso. The average per game is basically the same, he just didn’t win a title.
So that is the man that had to go. One of the best coaches Newell’s has seen this side of Lopez. He took over after the embarrassing loss to Central in the aperatura and led us safely out of relegation trouble. Now he is gone and I don’t totally understand why, but that is football. Thanks for all you did for la lepra, Ricky.

Caruso is a controvertial figure, he like talk a lot, sometimes that isn’t good, but he deserve respect becouse he grabbed newell’s when nobody want, and he did it well enough to continue at least for one more season. I have to say also that i’m glad when a figure like Gamboa or other great player came to home becouse they know what’s all about in la lepra.

I just noticed that Caruso Lombardi will be on Niembro’s La Ultima Palabra tonight. Check the link, I think it might be on after tonight’s opening Apertura match.

Thanks for the link, Mauro. I’m relatively happy thus far with Gamboa, but I still like Caruso and I’d kind of like to get my arms around what actually happened.
