Luis Escalada is leproso

By: Jeremy | August 13th, 2008

Out of basically nowhere Newell’s signs another player, ex Boca, Emelec, LDU Quito, Botafogo, and Gimnasia (J) striker Luis Escalada. At Emelec in 06 he scored 29 goals in 40 games. He followed that up with 16 goals in 38 games at Liga de Quito in 07. Below is a (lenghty-ish) video of some goals he scored with Emelec.

I’m not sure what to make of this signing, wait a minute, after last week they have no faith in the striking corp, after Fabbiani and maybe Armani. Who both like to play in the box. Escalada likes to play off the box some, behind the big striker, a la Tevez. So he is more of a complementary player to Fabbiarmani. Maybe Gamboa is looking to him to fill in a bit at the enganche position he talks so much about.

I don’t know anything about him other than what I read. He scored a good bit of goals in Ecuador, so he knows how to finish. Curious to see if he gets starting time or is just depth. I would think that only Fabbiani is guaranteed a spot, and it wouldn’t surpise me to see three strikers with Gamboa’s new style.
