Media frustrations

By: Jeremy | February 17th, 2008

I’m just a tad bit tired of the treatment the other 15 teams are getting from the media. River draws away at Newell’s and River did something wrong. No mention of Newell’s doing something right. I could list mountains of examples. If you aren’t Boca, River, Independiente, San Lorenzo (who lost again) or maybe Racing, although recent form has them more of a mid-table team, then you don’t get a lot of coverage or respect.

I was looking through all of the media sites in Argentina and the same old story, deferential treatment to the Big Four and Half. It’s great if you are a fan of one of the old powers, but if you aren’t, the news can be slim pickings. Luckily there are a good number of blog sites out there now dedicated to different teams so there are some options. Anyway, enough ranting for now.

I can understand your frustrations about the bias that exists towards the Big 5. And while I though Newell’s obviously had the better first half, I thought the game was much more even in the second, and by the end both teams were content to play for the draw.

Yeah I agree with “enough ranting for now”.
In the last two years we have seen Esudiantes, San Lorenzo, LanĂºs, Arsenal, Tigre and Banfield either win a tourney or come in second.
Jeremy, if your used to watching argy football, this is the best chance for NOB to steal a championship of sorts.
The level of competition is as open as it ever was.
So, respectfully, let’s cut out the crying…

    Albo,

Ok, I’ll stop crying for now. I would even say ever since the primera went to the National/Metropolitan format that the league has been wide open. I’ll need to research it a little, but I think most every championship won outside of the Big 5 has happened since then.

I do understand the media fascination with those teams. They have the vast majority of fans between them and the best predictor of future behavior is the past. People want to hear about them.

River is a great club, on of the most successful in the world. I don’t take anything from them or begrudge them any of the press they get, (because they can get hammered when things aren’t going well) I would just like to see a little broader coverage. That is probably one of the reasons lately that you don’t see too many native english speakers aware of any teams but the Big 5. When they don’t get a lot of spanish press, they certainly aren’t going to get any in english.

It was a good game, a little frustrating that NOB didn’t score in the first half. A nice game by Carrizo, also. You’re totally right about playing for the draw at the end. They each attacked a little, but weren’t doing to much to expose the keepers.

Boca looked like the class of the league last night against Argentinos, but I think if los millonarios can get their attack straightened out, they could go a long way this year. I may wind up totally eating crow on this, buy Newell’s this year is a lot better than Newell’s was for most of last year. La lepra spent a lot of time in River’s area and couldn’t convert.

This is a bit true, but it’s also true that if you are one of the Big 5 you get more negatives than the others. By just losing one or two games, the team gets hammered, the coach’s tactics get questioned, rumours about discontent players and affairs are made up, etc. Honestly, it happens a lot more to say, River, than it does to others such as Newell’s.

Anyway, keep up the good work on the blog!

Totally understand the down side of the press for River. San Lorenzo is hating life right now, and I am sure it is well documented. I would just like to see a little more coverage of NOB and the rest, not less coverage of the big boys.
