Newell’s 2 – 1 Estudiantes
By: Jeremy | October 18th, 2009Newell’s had the match of the season thus far and downed an Estudiantes side looking to go top. This game was a huge character test for Newell’s and they passed with flying colors. Video of the goals after the jump.
Boghossian opened the scoring with a fairly acrobatic header in the first half, off of a peletazo from Dolci that Achucarro corralled and crossed to Boghossian. It was sort of the equivalent of a right-handed quarterback running to his left and throwing back to the right. He was running away from the goal and headed the ball back to the other side of the goal.
The second goal was scored by none other than Rolo Schiavi, on a rebound from his own penalty kick.
Estudiantes leveled the match shortly (like two minutes) after Newell’s first goal and in the beginning of the second half were starting to dominate the game offensively. But Sensini pulled Bernardi and replaced him with Formica and la Lepra were on the offensive, eventually scoring the go ahead goal and continuing to press la Pincha.
It was good to see Ré back in el Coloso, even if he was wearing the Estudiantes kit, but I am glad that he lost his return match.
Next week doesn’t get any easier as Newell’s travel to Vélez-Sarsfield for another clash between sides with big hopes. Then they follow that up with another mid-week tie against Racing at home.
