Newell’s 2- Lanús 1
By: Jeremy | September 14th, 2008Hot dang, what a match. The first half was not so great, la lepra seemed to be out of sync still, and then that goal. But despite going down a man (and a goal) at half, they came out and played their best half of the season thus far.
Ernesto Cristaldo scored on a free kick, video to follow tomorrow, since I can’t find it anywhere right now. Then Diego Torres took a cross from Maurcio Sperdutti and drove it home to claim the three points for la lepra. German Caffa looked out of sorts in goal, but German Re, Rolando Schiavi, and Nicolas Spolli held the line and kept his confusion from costing more goals.
WHAT WAS HE THINKING AWARD – Juan Quiroga. Getting sent off over something so stupid is almost beyond comprehension. Not only did he put the team down a man, he is now suspended for the next match. That business may cost him his spot for several games, as Pablo Aguilar is a capable defender and I really don’t feel the defense loses anything when he is in.
IT’S ABOUT TIME AWARD – Cristian Fabbiani. Not that he could help it since the Romanian FA didn’t send his transfer stuff over very quickly, but it was good to finally see him on the field. I’ve got to wonder how this turns out if he isn’t on the field. The Lanús defenders were all over him. He played like a champ, especially when the team was down a man. Finally, a forward that is a legitimate threat on his own.
POETIC JUSTICE AWARD – Diego Torres. After being on the sidelines for nearly a year due to an ankle injury, Torres knocks in the winner with, you guessed it, the ankle he injured months ago.
SCREW YOU CARUSO AWARD -The Whole Team. La lepra PR man José García read a letter from the team to ex-coach Ricardo Caruso Lombardi in the post-game interview, before current coach Fernando Gamboa spoke. One of the paragraphs stated that “in response to the defamatory remarks of Mr. Lombardi directed at certain members of this Newell’s team, we choose silence further expose someone (Lombardi) who violated all the ‘codes’ that he says he lives by”. The letter was signed by all the members of the team, and was in reference to the latest verbal tussle in the media between Schiavi and Caruso Lombardi.
MAN OF THE MATCH AWARD – Diego Torres. Tough call, Fabbiani didn’t score but did everything else but. Torres knocks home the winner. Re played lights out in defense. In the end, I think Torres had the best game.

Great victory today, Independiente were coming undefeated, but la lepra play hard to win, D. Torres to me the best, and Fabiani score his first goal in Newell’s. Gamboa thought well the match and la hinchada is the most great in the world , go Newell’s vamos la lepra.

Totally agree with you Jose. Gamboa prepared the team well, Diego continues his great play and Fabbiani scores his first to claim the three points. Definitely their best game yet.
