Newell’s 3 – 0 Gimnasia La Plata
By: Jeremy | February 7th, 2009What a way to open up the Clausura. A three goal win at home, with players that Gamboa had basically discarded. Mauro Formica opened the scoring in the second half with a goal that has to be seen in slow motion to appreciate it. A fantastic, if fast, cross from Mauricio Sperduti is headed in by Formica. Video after the jump.
Then he drives in and creates an opening for Leandro Armani to score the second of the game. Formica’s third is a blooper over the keeper from some distance out. Check out the clip to see them all.
Even though I am sick today, I am still a tad bit giddy. What a great first game after Lope$. A newly cleaned and painted Coloso, with new seats to boot, and the club and police barred entry to 20 or so barras from the Lope$ era.
Santiago Salcedo was presented before the game, now that the deal with River is sealed. Not only did we get him back and a much needed 150K, but River is picking up his salary until the end of the season.
I’ve got to give the Man of the Match to Mauro Formico. Author of two goals, his moves with the ball set up Armani’s shot on the third. Seriously, watch the video. It wasn’t just the goals, if you saw the game, he was just about the only player in gear during the first half. Mauricio Sperduti get honorable mention, as he was the glue that bound the midfield to the strikers and he sent in several excellent crosses.
And just for the fun of it, a shot of the new banner hanging in the Coloso. It reads “trial and punishment to eduardo j lopez and his accomplices.”

This is the best way to start, great game, with a full stadium, no barras, simply the Newell’s that all leprosos want to see. Formica played an amazing game, the second fo him was a golazo. Sperduti was important, Bernardi also played very well. Go la lepra!!!!
