Newell’s greatest players.
By: Jeremy | August 22nd, 2008Ok, I thought I would go back and take a look at Newell’s biggest players over the years. And I don’t mean Maradona. Take a look at these players: Norberto Scoponi, Juan Manuel Llop, Jorge Theiler, Jorge Pautasso, Néstor Sensini, Gerardo Martino, Darío Franco, Juan José Rossi, Roque Alfaro, Jorge Gabrich, Gabriel Batistuta, Víctor Ramos, Sergio Almirón, Abel Balbo, Miguel Fullana, Juan Sen, Fernando Gamboa and Fabián Basualdo.
Some of those guys aren’t exactly household names, and some of them had pretty good careers. What do they all have in common? They are from Newell’s ‘inferiores’ (lower divisions) and made their debut with the club.
That roster is the core of another series of posts about the mismanagement that is rampant at Newell’s, but it got me thinking about doing a series of posts to highlight past heroes and idols of the club.
The other thing they have in common is that they all were on the Newell’s 1988 squad that lost the Libertadores final. That is one heck of a home grown team. I like to refer to them as the Golden Generation of Newell’s, fleeting as it was.
So anyway, in a few days I’ll get up a post about Newell’s all time scoring leader - Victor Ramos.
