Newell’s-River - first thoughts.
By: Jeremy | February 17th, 2008Well that stunk. 0-0. After watching the game, I really feel that Newell’s dropped two points. With the way River played, they are probably thinking they picked up a point. Nice save by Carrizo on Schiavi’s header that was probably the difference in a draw and a NOB victory. (I should probably mention Villagra bouncing one of the post for River as well.)
One good note, Villar hasn’t allowed a goal in five games now, a personal record and one would think possibly nearing an Argentine record. But not really. Carlos Barisio, of Ferocaril Oeste fame, had a run of 1075 minutes, covering 10 complete games in 1981 without giving up a goal. That’s insane.
Newell’s spent an awful lot of time in front of River’s goal to not have come away with something. Nico Cabrera was impressive in the first half, but seemed a bit winded in the second (who can blame him with mid-90’s heat and a heat index in the mid-105’s on a humid afternoon in Rosario) and the whole team seemed to just kick the ball up for grabs at the goal late in the game.
Defensively, they held off River’s attack, even when they went to three forwards in the second half. Which says a good deal, because I was thinking how ridiculously talented River’s attackers are.
Oh well, at least we didn’t lose. And when you are fighting the drop, a point is better than none. I’ll try and post some highlights later on tonight.
