Next Up, Lanús

By: Jeremy | September 19th, 2009

Good news. I figured out how to use the keyboard to make all of the Spanish symbols without having to cut and paste.

Just a quick review. We started out with a pair of 1-0 wins over Independiente and Huracán and followed up with a 1-1 draw to Boca Juniors. Then came Argentinos Juniors and a 1-0 loss. A lot of criticism was leveled at the team and Sensini following the Argentinos game, but it was really just one bad half.

Midfielder Franco Dolci, who seems set to get his first start, summed up the problem Newell’s is facing “We don’t need to play for the long ball.” Amen. Newell’s has relied on the long ball far too much and in the second half against Argentinos abandoned any other strategy.

The defense is playing pretty solid, only giving up .5 goals per game so if NOB can figure out a way to score a bit, then we might have a fun season ahead.

Game time is at 1pm EST on Sunday. Watch the game here or maybe here.

La Lepra head to Buenos Aires to face a Lanús squad that is coming off a mid-week tie against River Plate in the Copa Sudamericana, but I doubt it will make that big a difference. We need points out of this match, even if it is a draw. That should provide a little momentum and silence some of the criticism.

Nice to see you back, Jeremy. Dare I ask where you’ve been? I’ve had people asking about you, man!

    Love the quote from Dolci!

Funny, I just checked your blog to get your take on the game and saw the post that I was missing. I wish I had a good excuse, but I have been traveling a bit with the family and working like crazy. Plus I’ve been sick, but now I am back at it.

Good to know, and glad your feeling better. All in all, I can’t complain about your excuses, considering the games I haven’t seen due to social commitments.

I saw the first two, the feed crapped out on Boca and I saw the last two, so no real excuses there. It was just the posting that I put off. They surely looked the best the past game. A few long balls, but much more passing.
