Not What We Expected
By: Jeremy | October 20th, 2008Well, the draw away to Godoy Cruz could have been worse, barely. Newell’s could have taken away no points. So now we sit third on 18 points, two behind Tigre at 20 and now seven behind San Lorenzo. A draw isn’t the end of the world, but we need to put together a winning streak over the next several games.
That break really cooled the team down. They fought hard and had some chances, but they looked like they were playing in thick, black, sticky mud. They didn’t look like the team that beat Tigre or Argentinos.
They draw makes any chance of a championship a distant reality. It even hurts worse on the more realistic chances of making the Copa Libertadores. We sit sixth, nine points behind Estudiantes who occupy the last qualifying spot. It doesn’t matter if River finish higher than Newell’s as they are already in. San Lorenzo is top, and if they keep their lead will automatically qualify, leaving Boca and Estudiantes in the two remaining qualification spots, unless Newell’s can catch them. A seven point gap would be much more overcomeable.

Championships and Libertadores are things to be celebrated, not anticipated. What’s more important right now is that Gamboa continues to build this team in character, confidence, and unity. For him to gain a title, or qualify for the Libertadores in his first Championship in charge would be a miracle.
And there’s still a chance at that… if only just.

I agree with you David about the team and Gamboa, I also think that the most important right now is the clasico, becouse is close and later kick the Lopez ass out in a real election; gonna be a challenge achieve that, but we have to if we want the glory that we used to have. Go Newell’s libre!!!!!!
