Second Place (at least until tomorrow)

By: Jeremy | October 4th, 2008

Well that was another impressive win. Not quite as exciting as the 4-0 thrashing of Argentinos last week, but about as equally dominant. The win puts us level on points with Tigre at 17, but ahead on goal differential, 6-3. Boca plays Estudiantes tomorrow, and a win would bring them to 17 points but they would have a better goal differential (at least 7-6, depending on the outcome). San Lorenzo leads with a five point cushion, at 22.

La lepra is on a good run of form at the half way point to the season, winning 3 out of 4 (I’m just thinking that the Boca game was an anomaly.) And that loss to Boca may turn out to be a deciding factor in the season, and not necessarily in a bad way. Gamboa said that he saw something in the way that they played Boca that he could take advantage of (that was a very liberal translation). So after the loss, next game out they wallop Argentinos 4 – nil.

Not that Argentinos is in the best of form right now. But a thorough manhandling of second place Tigre maybe speaks of a Newell’s finding it’s rhythm and beginning to gel as a team.

Let’s dream a little, shall we. We still have to play San Lorenzo. A win and the gap closes to 2 points. Over the course of the other eight remaining games, la lepra would need to pick up three points and fend off Boca Juniors. Not exactly easy, but certainly doable. First we need to stop dropping points to teams we should beat. Godoy Cruz de Menoza away is next up after the international break. Three points, please.

That’s followed by Estudiantes at home and a little trip down to Buenos Aires to play a River Plate team down on their luck and seemingly concentrating on the Copa Sudamericana. We really need 9 points from that stretch, but seven is probably more realistic.

One more bright note, we are now 12th in the relegation standings, and perilously close to overtaking Argentinos and Godoy Cruz. Providing Newell’s keep on form, a tenth place standing in the promedios at the end of the apertura isn’t out of the question.

Thanks, Jose. Fabiani got both assists. Opposing teams have big problems with him in the lineup. Signing of the season, maybe.
