Suck! 1-1
By: Jeremy | February 20th, 2009Well, that Newell’s managed to scrape a draw out of that mess is I guess good news. Video of the goals after the break.
Salcedo got his first goal in his first game back on a nifty free kick to tie the game up, so that is a bright point. At least they didn’t lose after going down a goal (and I swear there were 12 lobos on defense after they went up), but I still see this as two points dropped.
La Lepra was really out of whack in the first half, except for the last five minutes or so. They looked better in the second half, but not quite as well oiled as in their first two games. They had about 4 times as many shots as Gimnasia, but couldn’t seal the deal. A couple of them were golden opportunities at that.
Anyway, Man of the Match goes to Lucas Bernardi. He was the only consistent thing in the first half, and the man was a loose ball magnet. He sucked up so many balls in the midfield that they should start calling him el Hueco Negro – or however you actually say black hole in Spanish. Huge game from him in midfield to prop up Newell’s during the first half.
Huracan lost, so we are still top of table, at least until tomorrow when Arsenal play Godoy Cruz.

I don’t believe it! Godoy Cruz beat Arsenal 1-0! Colon beat Sin Aliento 2-0. GC and Colon join Newell’s up top with 7 points, with the winner of River Plate vs Banfield joining the leaders.
With luck, that game will end in a draw.

Oh, and black hole — el agujero negro, el hoyo negro.

Though I’m not sure I even trust that.

It’s just a game, we tried to win all game they came to defend, always the same that because I hate play against this teams, for me they don’t deserve play in argentina’s first division, I think next year they going to play en la B…with Sin Aliento…?

José, I think that’s a pretty safe bet. Both Gimnasias are in the relegation, or playoff zone, along with Central and San Martin.
The only team that any of them might over take looks like Racing.
The question is, why does Newell’s always seem to have such problems against Los Lobos de Jujuy? I don’t remember beating them at all, ever, though I’m sure we must have done so.

When we have the better team, which is usually, they come looking to put 10 or 11 men behind the ball and play for the counter. If they can get a goal, they stop trying to score and play a very pesky defense. They aren’t a terrible team, and I think they might even avoid the direct drop and win the playoff.
Central and Racing look absolutely terrible. No spirit, no nothing. Maybe Simeone can change that around with Racing, but he doesn’t have a lot of real talent. I’ve got to think that Alfaro is one or two more lifeless losses away from joining Llop on the unemployment list.

I think he will keep them out of promotion and start moving them up the promedio. I’m glad to see him back coaching in the primera.
