The Big Draw
By: Jeremy | May 14th, 2009Well, it could have been better. Of course it could have been worse, also. The 1-1 draw at Central on Sunday keeps our unbeaten streak alive at three games vs. los sin aliento. Video at the bottom.
Still, it feels a lot like a loss because we were up a goal for 50+ minutes. I guess conceding the late draw always feels like a goal, much like Central are probably feeling more like it was a win than a draw.
The thing that could make this game really stand out in an extremely sucky way is if Central avoid relegation by a point.
San Martin de Tucuman currently sit 19th, occupying the last automatic relegation spot. They would have to make up 9 points over the last 6 games to pass Central. Remember that San Martin have played fewer games in the Primera, so their average is a little more affected by points than the rest of the league.
Gimnasia (LP) are 18th, and would need to make up 10 points to catch Central. Not going to happen for either of the teams chasing them. Most likely San Martin will go down as they currently need to make up 5 points on Gimnasia, who will play the number 3 team from the Primera B for the right to play in the A next season.
Which leaves Central and Racing fighting for safety at the 16th spot. Sin Aliento sit three behind Racing, so will need to make up four points to vault them. A tough task, but not impossible. Now, if they had lost this weekend, they would need 5 points in 6 games, a much bigger deal to pull off.
Of course, they would still have to lose a home and away tie to the #4 squad from the B, but at least they would have the chance to go down.
So anyway, if they catch Racing by a single point, or tie them and stay up on goal difference, we’re going to point to this game as the season saver for them, since we easily could have won the game.
