Thoughts on Gimnasia

By: Jeremy | February 20th, 2009

I just saw that Omar Labruna is making a couple of changes and going with a 4-4-2 against Newell’s.

The plan is pretty simple. They are going to defend like crazy and hope for a strike off the counter attack. While that is pretty much always their game plan, dropping into a 4-4-2 almost guarantees that Newell’s will be hard pressed to score much from the get go, at least they hope so.

Gimnasia will have only two real offensive players on the pitch in the first half, (and Gomez) and if they manage to score first, I’m pretty sure they will drop them all behind the ball and try to suffocate la Lepra on offense.

They aren’t a team that can usually sustain an attack, rather like I said above, they look to score off the break. Sort of like Newell’s until two coaches ago. And they aren’t built for scoring lots of goals, so if Newell’s can strike first it will be hard for los jujenos to overcome.
