Thoughts on the game
By: Jeremy | April 5th, 2008Always nice to win the classico, especially at their place. Man that defense of Newell’s was fierce. Diego Scotti was a warrior. He shut down their captain Gonzalez. Spolli was all over the place. Schiavi was steady and captain like. And what about Sa-Sa? He got an elbow to the head from Alvarez when they were both playing a ball and received a cut to his head. Since they couldn’t staunch the flow of blood, the medic bandaged his head like a mummy. Then he scored his fantastic goal. Not bad and maybe I sense a new nickname coming on for him.
I’d like to name my Man of the Match, but I will have to reflect on it for a bit, because right now I am saying to myself Salcedo of course, but Spolli and that defense just shut Central down. So I’ll have to reflect on it. I mean they were all over Central. They didn’t give an inch. Central’s coach, Leonardo Madelon, said that he didn’t want Newell’s to score first “because the defend very well. We hit a lot of long balls, which isn’t our game. We entered into the game that Newell’s wanted.” I would say the best defensive game of the year. Madelon summed it up best - “We didn’t know how to break through them. We tried but they didn’t have any weaknesses.”
Even the subs played well. Zapata helped with the defense, although I didn’t totally understand Zapata for the injured Bernardello, except maybe his height. Then Ferreyra for Salcedo was pretty standard. A couple of time Ferreyra stepped up and stopped a Central advance. Perez only played a few minutes, but he stepped right in and contributed by taking the ball away at least once.
Salcedo celebrating the only goal of the game. Seriously, I can see him becoming The Mummy. I think that would be la mumia? in spanish.
