We Need Three

By: Jeremy | March 20th, 2009

Newell’s limps into an Independiente side that is playing for the last time under coach Pepe Santoro needing to take the full three points if they are going to have any chance of making a run at Lanus or a Copa berth.

Sensini has announced four changes from last week. Spolli is in for suspended Schiavi, Salcedo for Formica, Aguilar for Pillud (due to a run of bad form), and Matias Donnet is back from injury and stepping in for Mauricio Sperduti.

Newell’s sit six points adrift of Lanus, in eighth place. No reason to panic, and winning the league would be a large undertaking for any club, so I don’t think the season will be judged by that standard.

However, they are six points behind Tigre for the last Copa Sudamerica spot. That is within reach and I think would be a real disappointment to the fans if they don’t seal it up. Tigre is not in good form this year, all thought they have won a couple of games now, so Newell’s can’t keep drawing matches. They’ve only lost one game, and in the draws usually could have won if they would have focused better. A lot of times I see a draw and think we picked up a point. This season I saw them all as dropping two points. Like Jose M said in the comments on the last post, last season and the season before that we would have lost the game to Huracan and not drew it, so progress is definitely on the march.

    Ha, ha.

The world is really a small world. I happen to be the roommate from Toluca. The current champion in the Mexican soccer league, and currently the only unbeaten team this season, too.

I found this site in a rather random way, but that is a different story.

I said that the world is small because now I live in Argentina. Just as Jeremy, I like to pick a team to chear for.

Now, living in Argentina I was looking for a team to cheer for. Also as Jeremy, I discarded Boca and River right away, but I did not pick Newell’s.

I went for Independiente, why? The answer is also simple. Independiente’s nickname is the Red Devils, just as Toluca’s and as it is, Manchester United, too.

This season, and that happens to be yesterday (one more coincidence – I swear I didn’t choose this week to write this. I just found it today) Independiente and Newell’s played yesterday. Fortunatelly for me, and unfortunatelly for Jeremy, Independiente beat Newell’s 4-1.

I thought this would somehow complement my good friend’s story.

Memo, good to hear from you. What a small world. I’m glad to see I’m not the only one picking teams from other leagues to pull for. Here’s to back-to-back Toluca championships. And lest I forget Newell’s, a place in the Copa Sudamericana.

So how did you find the blog, anyway?
