Weekly Relegation Update
By: Jeremy | March 27th, 2008Well, Newell’s managed to hang on to 14th place, despite the draw and depending on the outcome of the the suspended Racing game (I don’t think Racing will be awarded the points, so I am not expecting them to catch us.). This week there are several interesting games amongst the lower half of the relegation table.
San Martin has Racing at home. Big game for both teams, especially San Martin. They currently sit 19th, in an automatic drop spot. A win against Racing, coupled with the (I am assuming) inevitable loss for Colon against Gimnasia(LP), would vault them out of 19th and the auto relegation spots and put them into 18th and a relegation play-off spot. Add in a loss by Gimnasia de Jujuy to Central in the other bottom of table match up and San Martin would actually move into 17th place by a whopping 1/1000th point margin (if my feeble math skills are correct). This could prove to be a huge weekend for them.
Speaking of Central/Gimnasia(J) , that is a tough game to root for. On one hand, Central losing would keep them off of our tails a little, setting next weekend’s classico as a chance to put some real space between us. On the other hand, I apparently have a soft spot for San Martin, because I wouldn’t mind seeing Gimnasia(J) lose. I guess I will have to go with Gimnasia(J) on this one. Since San Martin has only played 26 game on the relegation averages, a win for them lifts their average way more than a win for 102 (and counting) games played Newell’s. A good run of form (I know it isn’t going to happen, probably) and they could be overtaking us – you never know.
Also, Argentinos Jrs. and Banfield will be fighting it out for 11th place. I know they are both solid mid-table teams right now, but Argentinos is on a little run of good form right now and are most likely thinking Copa Sudamerica, as they sit fifth in the cup standings, only two points ahead of Banfield. I really don’t totally understand the cup qualifications (nor do I think the AFA does either) but you want to finish in the top five, since it seems like Boca get to go to each of the two Cups every year so there go two spots. Actually Scott over at the Argentinos Offside blog does a pretty decent run down on it here, (make sure to read the comments for a decent link explaining it from the conmebol site)
