Weekly Relegation Update - Week 9
By: Jeremy | April 7th, 2008Another week of fixtures gone by and Newell’s is still in 14th place. The good news is we beat Central and are widening the gap on the teams below us, except for San Martin. Their victory pole vaulted them from 19th and an auto relegation spot to 15th. Not bad. But with their small number of games played compared to la lepra, wins for them raise their promedio a lot more than a win does for Newell’s.
If we both win this week, Newell’s will drop a spot and and San Martin will move up to 14th. Kind of sucky, but we would still have five other teams behind us. And at this point, barring an epic collapse, or the ghosts of Racing’s past, I don’t think the auto drop is a factor and I am beginning to not even worry about the promotion spots. La lepra has six very winnable games left so we should do all right.
Next week I will start posting cup standing updates, as we have crawled into ninth with seven spots up for grabs for the Sudamericana, although Arsenal is behind us they get one of the seven as current champs, so we need to climb into sixth, at least. Fifth would be a lot more comfortable (this is Argentina and the AFA we are talking about here).
Here are the current relegation standings.
The Gimnasia (LP) - Banfield tie means a win and la lepra definitely gain on someone ahead of them. Of course, beating Argentinos guarantees the same thing. And beating Argentinos would put Newell’s ahead of them in the cup standings. I guess Gimnasia (although they are more “catchable” in the relegation standings) winning would help Newell’s more by allowing them to pass Banfield (providing Newell’s wins) in the cup standings.
Oh well, here’s just hoping for a Newell’s win.
