Weekly Relegation Update
By: Jeremy | March 11th, 2008OK, after last weekend’s dismal showing (to me, any loss is dismal), I figure we aren’t going to climb out of the danger zone any time soon, so I might as well keep updated on the battle against the drop.
Forgive the lousy formatting of the post, I’m still learning to make it pretty.
We’re still in 14th place, tied with Racing on average, and 3 spots north of the relegation game slots (17 and 18). I feel fairly secure that we won’t drop far enough to hit the automatic relegation places (19 and 20), but who can really ever tell. Olimpo and San Martin have played far fewer games, so a win will lift their average more than a win will lift Newell’s.
Looking at the table, I think the best we can hope for is 12th. With 14 games to go that will take a lot of doing. More realistic would be a 14th place finish. Which would be great as far as relegation survival goes, but probably not superb as far as cup placement goes. I really want the second half of the season to be about qualifying for the Sudamericana (I think the Libertadores is well out of reach). It can happen, maybe.
If we can survive the first half of the season (which is definitely - on paper - the hardest) we should have a decent chance at a good run in the second half. But not if the scoring doesn’t step it up.
Other than la lepra, I’ll be pulling for River, Argentinos, and Olimpo. It would be nice to win a few in these next couple of weeks and not have to worry about this much longer.
